A winding mountain road through the pines at dusk

FOR MOTO RIDERS

THE ROAD
LEADS HERE.

A simple place to pull in, set up camp, and pause between rides.

WHEN TO RIDE

RIDING THE SEASONS.

HIGH SEASON

June to October

Peak riding. Summer brings cooler mountain temperatures than the lowlands, and October brings the world-famous fall color. Pavement is clean and the riding is excellent. Expect heavy traffic and crowded scenic turnouts, especially mid to late October when the leaf-peepers fill the big routes, and plan around afternoon thunderstorms.

SHOULDER SEASON

April, May and November

The transition window. Wide-open roads, light traffic, and spring blooms in May. The weather is unpredictable: April and November can bring sudden temperature drops, high winds and frost up at the highest gaps on the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Cherohala Skyway, plus the odd bit of debris on the road. Pack layers.

LOW SEASON

December to March

The quiet window. Empty roads on clear days and total solitude, but black ice, rockslides, salt and gravel are common, and the high-elevation parkways close for long stretches because they are not plowed. Camp is closed November 15 to March 15, and we open for the season on March 15.

PULL IN. PITCH UP.
